The Other 6 Seconds?

It's said that the average male thinks about sex every 7 seconds. Cole Jones spends the other 6 seconds thinking about his beloved Dallas Stars.Cole moved to the DFW Metroplex in 1991, as an elementary school student. A few years after that, the Minnesota North Stars decided to join him in the Lone Star State, and it was the beginning of a love affair that has lasted for over 16 years and counting.

n564581479_2896018_6844555I started this site in the summer of 2009, out of jealousy of all the fun my buddy Greg Ezell was having with his new blog, Something's Bruin. It started simply enough, with some ideas for features like my uniform history project, and as a vehicle for me to blab on and on about all the pointless Stars history I've learned. In the short period of time between my original launch and now, I've seen my blog grow faster that I ever expected.
Originally located at theother6seconds.blogspot.com, I got solicited for quotes and commentary from such well regarded hockey sites as Yahoo's Puck Daddy and the New York Times "Slap Shot" blog. I then had my uniform history project featured on ESPN's Paul Lukas Uniwatch Blog. I have no idea how word spread so quickly, but I give loads of credit to everyone from The Breakaway Network, which is an online hockey community I've been a part of for longer than I'd like to admit.

On the old blogspot layout, I had a bio that introduced myself and explained what I'm all about. I liked it, so I decided to tack it on to this section of the new Bloguin layout. Hopefully by the time you're done reading it, I've both entertained you, and endeared myself to you. I wub my readers. <3.

Name: Cole Jones

Occupation: Currently employed as a graveyard-shift communications officer at the local police station. This means 911 call-taker, non-emergency call-taker, dispatcher, etc... Basically everything that goes on behind the scenes at a small town PD in Southern Dallas County.

Stars Fan Since: The inaugural year in Dallas, thanks to my big sis who remembered watching the Bruins when we lived in Boston, and the Rangers when we lived in New York. She got me into it very quickly and effectively.

Favorite Stars: Derian Hatcher, Andy Moog, Guy Carbonneau, Sergei Zubov, Roman Turek, Arturs Irbe, Stephane Robidas, Mattias Norstrom, and Steve Ott. Too many?

Most hated opponents: Jeremy Roenick, Bryan Marchment, Dominik Hasek, Mike Peca, Sean Avery (before, after, and during his tenure here) and the Detroit Red Wings.

Most prized Stars heirlooms: Autographed Hatcher jersey, 2 Actual Seats from Reunion Arena, Home-made Dallas Stars toilet seat (thank Elizabeth and Dave), Replica jersey signed by several of my favorites from the first Ice-Breaker event.

My 15 Minutes of fame: 2 instances. First was at Reunion Arena right before my 15th or 16th birthday. I had mentioned on my old Stars website at the time that I was planning to wear a t-shirt to the game in honor of Mick McGeough. Simple kelly green tshirt with "McGEOUGH SUCKS" in iron-on white letters. As me and my family entered the arena that evening, the women at the door handing out the puck-race coupons and fliers stopped us and exclaimed "Oh my god, it's Cole! We read you were going to wear this tshirt. That is too funny. You're wise beyond your years." At that point all 3 women gathered around and did a brief Wayne's World style bow to me. It blew my mind, but I think it blew my sister's mind even more.

The second instance was more recently, the season following the lockout. The Stars dedicated that season to the fans. "Real Hockey. Real Fans." was the slogan, and they sent out emails to fans asking them for their photos and a brief set of survey answers so they could use the information on ticket stubs, programs, web articles, and other mediums. I nerded it up and posed for some photographs and sent it in. They ended up putting my name and pictures on the game tickets of a November game against the Kings. I managed to get tickets 3 rows from the glass for that game, and was recognized by fans all night who would call out "COLE!" and then point at their ticket stubs and give me a high-five or thumbs up. It was great to be a celebrity for a night. I then walked into the team shop after the game and noticed my picture was also used on a collage on the cover of the media guide that season.

Hobbies outside of hockey: Listening to vinyl records, drinking "fancy" beers, reading classic literature, eating loads and loads of sushi, and watching sports of all kinds.

Favorite music: Lots of classic punk music, but I can find something in just about any genre that interests me. Some top favorites are the Misfits (Danzig-era only, please), Deftones, Bad Brains, The Stooges, The Doors, Hank Williams Sr. and Black Flag.

Favorite authors: Kurt Vonnegut, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, and Jonathan Safran Foer.

Favorite non-hockey sports teams: Tennesse Titans football and Boston Red Sox baseball. Not much of a basketball fan, but if I'm watching it, I root for my hometown Mavericks. I also feel loyalty to the Blackburn Rovers English soccer team, even though I don't get to see them play very often.

If I'm not watching sports: I'm likely watching The Office, Sanford and Son, Adult Swim, Showtime's Dexter, CNN, or the History Channel.
